Hyundai Tucson's star rising

Hyundai crossover's quiet good looks demand top billing

SCOTT BURGESS
Los Angeles
Hyundai Motor Co. has grown tired of its Not Ready for Prime Time status in the United States.
It has spent nearly two decades repairing and then polishing its reputation. In the past, critics, including myself, have accused it of copying designs and then dulling them up. Some vehicles had styling, just not Hyundai's.
Not anymore. Hyundai is original, respectable and nibbling out of Toyota Motor Corp.'s, Honda Motor Co.'s and Nissan Motor Co.'s Bento Box. It is becoming that other guy with some pretty cool cars.
Need more evidence? Take a look at the 2010 Hyundai Tucson small crossover. It's surprisingly comfortable, offers a quiet, smooth ride and still has import good looks. It drives like a car, hauls like a crossover and costs less than some compacts.
And Hyundai has moved into a leadership position with its powertrains, as the Tucson will feature only four-cylinders and six-speed transmissions, something other carmakers will undoubtedly follow. The V-6 has disappeared.
Really, why should there be those other two cylinders? The 2.4-liter Dual Overhead Cam inline four-cylinder engine provides 176 horsepower and 168 pound-feet of torque, plenty of juice for canyon-carving around Malibu. It's also on par with all of the major four-cylinder competition such as Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV 4 and Ford Escape -- just with better gas mileage.
The Tucson is the only compact crossover out of that group to top 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Overall, the Tucson can manage 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway -- a 24 percent improvement over the 2009 model. Only the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox can top the Tucson's numbers.
Many small changes
Creating a lighter, more powerful, slightly larger vehicle is no easy task. Much like every carmaker, Hyundai had to chip away at improving mileage numbers. There is no easy big fix, just lots of little ones. It had to improve the aerodynamics, make it lighter, add electric power steering and a better gearbox. It may sound easy enough, but if it was, there'd be more than two five-passenger crossovers that managed better than 30 mpg on the highway.
Hyundai developed its own transmission -- a big undertaking that will inevitably make it onto a lot of new vehicles -- one that is particularly smooth and fluid (as well as smaller and lighter). The transmission never hunted for the right gear and responded to the driver's input quickly and efficiently. Driving up a steep hill, you could feel it find the right downshift and provide the additional needed power.
Also, it never raced to sixth gear too quickly, an annoying fuel-saving feature other vehicles tend to have to save a few more drops of gasoline. The Tucson never felt like it sacrifices performance simply for the sake of fuel savings.
Hyundai has included a green Eco light on the instrument panel that comes on every time your foot comes off the accelerator. Engineers say that if a driver follows the light's suggestions to keep it on more than off, you can improve your fuel efficiency by as much as 17 percent. Color me skeptical, I just wish you could turn it off. I don't mind eco-driving, I just don't want the lecture.
More for your money
But that was really the only feature in the cabin that felt like a well-intentioned gimmick. The cabin was spacious, well-designed and comfortable. The flow is calming and the lack of sharp edges means Hyundai was safe from any cutting criticism.
The speedometer and tachometer are set deeply into the dash and the center of dash bumps out nicely to make all of the controls easily accessible to the driver. There are lots of nicely appointed silver trim throughout the cabin that adds a touch of sophistication and luxury. Nothing is over the top, nothing offends, but everything seems to meld together into an intuitive interior.
The value of Hyundai has always been that the brand provides more for your money and the Tucson carries that tradition forward. Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operation with voice recognition, remote keyless entry and a 160-watt, six-speaker audio system. The stereo can play a driver's iPod or other music device, a USB thumb driver, and then control the device through the vehicle's optional navigation screen. The driver's iPod and cell phone can fit nicely in a small open storage bin at the base of center of the dash, where the USB port rests.
There are some optional features that are certainly worth consideration as well. The leather interior is crisp and clean and feels much more luxurious than the Hyundai's low price tag. Hyundai has added a two-pane panoramic sun roof that provides blue sky views from the second row and makes the cabin feel even more open.
There's also the versatility within the cabin for someone who carries more stuff than people. The 60/40 split second row can create up to 55.8 cubic feet of stuff and even with the second row up, there's 25.7 cubic feet of room.
Most of all, there's plenty of room to stretch your legs -- what with 41.2 inches of legroom in the front and 38.7 inches in the back.
Smoothly quiet
Now, while driving around Southern California, perhaps the most noticeable aspect of the Tucson was how quiet it rode. This is in part because of all the work Hyundai did to deaden the sounds from the outside as well as smooth out its ride.
Most impressive was the Tucson's electric power steering that felt well-weighted on the road. The feedback was excellent, and had no one told me, I would have guessed it was power rack-and-pinion steering instead of electric. (One reason this helps improve a vehicle's gas mileage is that traditional power steering required a pump that ran off the car's engine. Now that no pump is needed, power to move a belt to operate the pump is, instead, used to power the car.)
Not every fuel saving idea was original and the Hyundai Tucson never wows you the way some vehicles do. But the redesigned Tucson is ages ahead of its predecessor and demonstrates how much Hyundai has matured.
This is just the beginning for the Korean carmaker, as 2010 promises even more vehicles with clean design and good gas mileage.
To assume Hyundai is not ready for the prime time is to make a big mistake, because it's already there.

Great Article

Hyundai sales rise during 2009 auto crisis Scott Burgess / The Detroit News Los Angeles -- Hyundai Motors Co. can claim something no other major carmaker can: It sold more cars in 2009 than it did in 2008. While automotive sales industrywide have fallen by 23.9 percent in the U.S. and carmakers struggle to survive, Hyundai has thrived. "In 2009, we learned to never let a crisis go to waste," said John Krafcik, Hyundai U.S. president, paraphrasing a comment made famous last fall by White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Hyundai holds 4.3 percent of the U.S. market, up from 3.1 percent through November 2008, according to Autodata Corp. Its rise began in January when Hyundai launched its Assurance Program, which struck a chord with consumers facing economic uncertainty. The deal was simple: If a new car buyer lost a job, Hyundai would buy the vehicle back and there would be no mark on the buyer's credit. Quick, clean and simple, the much-acclaimed program put Hyundai on many people's radar, industry analysts and Hyundai executives said. "Hyundai was selling peace of mind during an uncertain time," said Aaron Bragman, an IHS Global Insight analyst. The South Korean automaker has bought back fewer than 100 vehicles, and the program brought the company a large amount of good will from consumers, said Jim Trainer, a Hyundai spokesman. Other car companies have tried to emulate the program with similar offers, but none has gained the same amount of traction. "People saw assurance as quality, safety and a good feeling," Krafcik said. The company intends to capitalize on that impression. Image improves For years, Hyundai struggled with its image as a company that copied other carmakers' designs while making poor quality vehicles, Krafcik said. In recent years, however, the automaker has created critically acclaimed, original vehicles that have earned high quality ratings and praise from critics and customers alike. "Hyundai has a lot of momentum going for it right now," Bragman said. With new and redesigned vehicles, such as the Hyundai Tuscon crossover rolling into dealers now and the midsize Hyundai Sonata coming next year, Hyundai will have a new products arriving at the right time, he said. And it doesn't appear that Hyundai intends to ease its assault. Krafcik said that in the coming months, the carmaker will expand its Assurance Program, though Hyundai officials declined to provide specifics. The automaker, experts said, remains in a good position despite the floundering economy. "Hyundai is a real threat to the Japanese carmakers because its products appeal to younger consumers who have no loyalty to Toyota or Honda," Bragman said. Tops in fuel economy Also in Hyundai's favor is its fuel economy ratings. Hyundai beat Honda Motor Co. for the No. 1 spot in fleet fuel economy this year. "That's only going to get better in the coming years," as the company promotes its environmental prowess, Krafcik said. Hyundai, of course, does not have a full lineup that includes gas-guzzling SUVs and pickups. It sells only a few V-8 equipped vehicles and has announced some of its new vehicles, such as the Tucson, will only come with four-cylinder engines. In the future, Hyundai will introduce a few gas-electric hybrids and promote it efficient direct-injection gas four-cylinder engines. "We going to be a leader in fuel economy," Krafcik said, "but we're going to do the Hyundai way."

Genesis Sedan and ESC Do Well in the Snow

This driving experience engaged the ESC, Electronic Stability Control, almost continuously and it worked well - very well to ensure control and handling on the slippery snowy roads including the I5 highway.

The 2009 Hyundai Genesis with the 290 horsepower V6 engine was a smooth cruiser at 80 miles an hour on the dry highway and responsive in the snow for a rear-wheel drive sedan. The Genesis tested had a $36,000 MSRP with the moonroof and impressive upgraded crystal clear sound system lifting the price above the $32,250 base price.

The Genesis might be a poor man's BMW but it has similar features except price and prestige so you might call it a smart man's luxury value choice. When I first jumped into the Genesis there was nothing to learn or adjust, the ergonomics fit well, including the headrest, and I drove off. All the instruments were in predictable places and easy to operate from the radio to the seats. The quiet and roomy cabin is immediately noticeable. As you can see, there's plenty of backseat room. You may remember the comment, "Our engineering benchmarks were Mercedes E-Class, Infiniti M, and Lexus GS," from John Krafcik who introduced the Genesis and was recently appointed Acting President and Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Motor America.

Not even the Northwest gets snowstorms of this magnitude and duration very often but for those who have to challenge them to local ski resorts on a regular basis should ask Hyundai to consider an all-wheel drive version of the Genesis, something BMW has just announced for the new 7 Series and something that has given Audi's Quattro a growing advantage in the luxury segment. Until then the Genesis' ESC does an excellent job. You get a lot for the price of a Genesis.

Genesis Coupe sets new world record!

Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Rhys Millen Set World Record to Take Pikes Peak Time Attack Title

World Champion Driver Rhys Millen Claims Ninth Mountain Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., July 19, 2009; The 87th Annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has a new world record holder today - the Rhys Millen Racing Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe. World Champion driver Rhys Millen piloted the Genesis Coupe to his ninth overall class title, breaking one of his two world records in 17 trips to the Hill Climb.

"Driving the Genesis Coupe for the first time at Pikes Peak in front of thousands of fans is an amazing experience," said Millen. "Nothing compares to the pressure and thrill of Pikes Peak while competing against yourself for the record."

Millen set the record time of 12 minutes, 9 seconds (12:09.397) more than 1 minute and 23 seconds faster than his nearest competitor in the rear-wheel-drive Time Attack Class. At the finish line on the summit of Pikes Peak, Millen reported that the car that never skipped a beat, no matter how hard he challenged the diverse terrain and high altitude, and finished with both rear tires down to steel belts. Millen utilized the Genesis Coupe's rear-drive layout to its full potential, power-sliding his Genesis Coupe mere inches away from guard rails, trees and 2,000-foot cliffs, while besting his own record of 12 minutes, 31.61 seconds by 22 seconds.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motor sports race in America, second only to the Indianapolis 500, and a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs. First run in 1916, this year marks the 87th running of the thrilling "Race to the Clouds."

The race is run on a course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the oxygen-depleted 14,110-foot summit of Pikes Peak. As the drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps muscle strength. The thin air also robs engines of up to 30 percent of their power at the summit. It's a true test of endurance for competitors and vehicles.

This year the race has 11 classes and features a variety of automotive, semi-truck, exhibition, open wheel, super stock car, pro truck and motorcycle classes with a field approaching 200 competitors.

With more than 16 years of racing experience, Rhys Millen has established himself as one of the premier rally/drifting drivers in North America. Born in New Zealand in 1972, Rhys is the son of famed rally and off-road racer Rod Millen. Rhys joined Rod in the U.S. as a teenager and soon afterwards established himself as racer by taking first at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in the Open Division and winning Rookie of the Year. He won the Formula Drift championship in 2005 and the Red Bull Drifting World Championship in 2008.

Millen and his team are an ideal match to help launch Hyundai's motorsports effort with the Genesis Coupe. Millen's driving credentials include movie stunts, multiple drifting championships, a Pikes Peak world record and his recent New Year's Eve Las Vegas truck flip. But behind Millen's success in the driver's seat is a full team of engineers and fabricators that know how to maximize the potential of a race car.

Millen had his first opportunity to test drive the Genesis Coupe's performance credentials when he performed precision driving for the car's debut advertising campaign airing during Super Bowl XLIII. Millen flogged a Genesis Coupe for a full three days during the filming process at Road Atlanta racetrack, and the car never stopped asking for more.
